We are a romance-first bookstore that heavily embraces speculative fiction. Our focus is on young adult and adult romance, fantasy, thriller, science fiction, horror, and occult books. We have a smaller collection of graphic novels, and our bargain book section has something for all ages.
Aber Stoat Books has been on a long journey to open a brick-and-mortar location in Carlsbad Village. We have been operating in Carlsbad as an online bookshop since 2024 and have focused on building; every special order and every purchase over the last two years has kept us on target towards a physical location. Our priorities have been building community programming, bookseller education, and establishing connections with industry professionals and authors.
We also have a dedicated indie publishing house; local writer submissions are wanted.

Mandy Parrey wears many indie hats: bookseller, publisher, and the writer behind the names ML Florez and Rivkah Plume. As the founder of Aber Stoat Books and Aber Stoat Publishing LLC, she focuses on connecting readers with unique titles in the fantasy, romance, thriller, and occult genres. Between publishing local writers, curating the bookshop’s collection, sourcing special editions and signed copies, and hosting the Olde Carlsbad Silent Book Club, she is reading and reviewing as many upcoming books as she physically can!
